Where the Cider Houses Actually Are

The first practical thing to know: the cider houses are not in San Sebastián.

They are out in Gipuzkoa, inland from the city, and the greatest concentration anywhere in the Basque Country is around two towns.

Astigarraga

The one most associated with cider. A small town a short drive south-east of San Sebastián with an unusual density of sagardotegis in and around it, plus the cider museum.

If someone says “we’re going to a cider house” near San Sebastián, this is statistically where they are going.

Hernani

Neighbouring, slightly larger, and likewise thick with cider houses. Together with Astigarraga it forms the core of the cider country behind the city.

Why the location decides your transport

This is the whole reason the guided visits exist, and it is worth spelling out because it is not obvious from a map.

Cider is served continuously throughout the meal. That is the format — barrels opened repeatedly, everyone getting up with a glass. There is no version of a cider house evening where you have one drink with dinner.

So:

Driving yourself means somebody in the party does not drink at all. Not “drinks less” — does not drink, across a long meal built around drinking.

Taxis work but need arranging in both directions, and the return leg late in the evening from a rural cider house is the part people underestimate.

Public transport exists toward these towns but is not built around cider house sittings, which run late and finish when they finish.

One thing to check when booking
